Carrie was the source of several big firsts. It was Stephen King's first novel. It was also his first book to be adapted into a film. It was the first Brian De Palma film to earn multiple Oscar nominations ... and one of those was Sissy Spacek's first of many Oscar noms.
For me, it's my first official movie poster-sized (27x40") horror artwork! It's my first horror-themed art with three different versions. And it's the first Stephen King-penned story-turned-film I have referenced in Mod Pop Art form that King himself actually liked (he notoriously had many problems with Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining)!
It had been some time since I'd used one of my earlier trademarks of a painted solid silhouette form, superimposed over the top of a more detailed piece, and blending the two elements to create a new image, a la "They're Coming to Get You, Barbara" or "The Shape Lurks". In this case, I felt it was the perfect way to utilize a silhouette of Carrie White's body over the top of her creepy, wide-eyed, trance-like face to represent the blood that pours over her in that oh-so-iconic prom queen scene, capturing the moment just before (uh, spoiler alert) a series of relentless bullying triggers her to open a can of telekinetic whoop-ass on the entirety of Bates High School's student population. I think it worked out well, and I'm ecstatic to be able to offer my homage to Carrie, an absolute staple of my early childhood (I know - my parents are weird). Enjoy, and why not collect all three?!
