Exploding onto the scene when rap music was in its infancy, Beastie Boys broke — no — made up the rules as they went along, quickly becoming a true cultural phenomenon. Jewish white guys who can rap? Yes. And do it well? Yes. And they used the best samples (illegally at first)? Yes. Wait - are they a hip-hop group? Yes. And they're fully accepted and respected as artists by the black hip-hop community? Yes. And they play instruments? Yes. And they have punk songs? Yes. And loungy, funky, chill instrumentals? Yes. And they put all of these styles and more on the same records as the rap songs? Yes. I could go on, but you get it — they were pioneers of music, not just hip-hop. But the thing my friends and I always loved most about them is their sense of humor ... which is at peak levels in the masterpiece video for the genre-defying "Sabotage." (Is it rap? Punk? Rock? Nah, it's just B-Boys.) This art piece is my homage to that video, directed brilliantly by Spike Jonze, in an obvious nod to gritty (but often also cheesy) '70s cop shows like Starsky & Hutch and Hawaii Five-0. It took me 50 (literally!) attempts at different layouts and/or color schemes before I finally found The One. In fact, this was initially a commission piece for — get this — an anniversary gift! How cool are these people?! I'm actually, like, seriously jealous they had the idea of doing a Sabotage poster before I did. What was I thinking, not having this in my repertoire already? It screams Plaid Design Mod Pop Art. Thankfully, the clients are cool enough to allow it to be shared with the world. So take a few minutes to inspect and appreciate the little details, and then throw this bad boy — er, B-Boy? — in your cart so it can make it to your wall where it belongs. Because the Beastie Boys are the best.
