Description

File this one under "crazy mash-ups no one ever asked for."

I've always been a fan of sidekicks in film and TV, often digging them more than the main characters ... fair to say I pretty much always root for the underdog over the favorite, in just about any scenario. So I thought, what if there was a way to put a bunch of them together ... without their annoying leads weighing them down? How about a bar named Sidekicks that was created just for these so-called Second Bananas? Well, here we are, in possibly my most ambitious piece to date, where you, the viewer, are tending bar for a bunch of sidekicks! And keen observers will notice that — counting the stuff on the walls — I've mashed up no less than 10 different universes into one absurd scene. Oh, and yes, you're seeing that correctly: Chewie is in fact boldly making a play for Ethel Mertz. Probably an upgrade over Fred, to be honest ...

I don't usually do this because I figure you either know who it is or you don't, but since this piece involves so many different elements from different worlds, I'll go ahead and list them for you, from left to right: Chewbacca from Star Wars, Ethel from I Love Lucy, Grady from Sanford and Son, Igor from Young Frankenstein, Rhoda from Mary Tyler Moore and Rhoda, Norton from The Honeymooners, and Woodstock from Peanuts. On the walls, along with the neon sign, you'll find fully-fleshed out original art pieces I created just for this work, including The Rubbles from The Flintstones, a Chicago poster (you know, the "Second City"), a full SCTV a.k.a. Second City Television piece (including stylized floating heads of Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Martin Short, and Andrea Martin), and of course, an RC Cola sign, the red-headed stepchild of colas.

So this one's for all the underdogs out there, the scrappy fighters who are not always, but often funnier, smarter, cooler, and better looking than their attention-hogging lead counterparts. Ready Player 2!!
